Catch of the Day #019

Friday is Braai day, and what better way to bring the family together than over a lekker meal. Fresh tuna steaks over the coals are easy to prepare and always a crowd pleaser.  Alternatively go traditional with the ultimate braai fish in the Cape - a vlekked snoek with some apricot smoor sauce.   As we change seasons you would have noticed some sporadic changes of fish species on the website. Fish like red roman, redstump, yellowtail, silverfish and cape salmon have been showing themselves as the weather has allowed.   With the strong weather this week and few fishing...

Catch of the Day #018

Fishing is improving and the change of seasons is here. We have had our first few catches of yellowtail and snoek up the west coast near Dassen Island. The yellowtail are large, round and healthy. In my opinion, the west coast yellowtail are the best tasting as they are fattier and come out the cold water from the depths where they have been feeding on mantis shrimp and squid. In Struisbaai, some catches of kob, silverfish, red roman and red-stumpnose have also started in earnest. Silverfish is a great ocean hero as they school up in big numbers on the reefs...

The weather has finally allowed us to get some inshore fishing in. The cold waters have produced on cue, and good catches of fresh cold water handline silvers are been caught as well as some red fish off the reefs.   Silver fish is the “snapper” of the Western Cape waters. They are caught in Gaansbaai, Struisbaai and Arniston in the winter months by community-based handline fisherman. Silvers are specifically targeted by these fishermen when they school up in good numbers in the shallows.   Silver fish, also called carpenter, is a great table fish. Its white firm flesh of...

Known for its distinctive shape like the moon, opah or moonfish is an elusive, warm blooded fish that frequents our waters off Cape Point. They can grow up to 100kg and 1.1m in size and are sought after for their delicious, rich, creamy taste. Colour varies from a light pink to orange to red. Different parts of the fish yield different flavour profiles. We endeavour to cut steaks symmetrically, but due to the shape of the fish some cuts will vary. This is our first time offering moonfish so give it a try and give us your feedback. We will...

Catch of the Day #015

Winter is here and the cold fronts are bringing big seas, rain and strong winds. This offers us very little safe gaps to get out to sea and catch fresh fish. One of my favourites on these cold days is a hot pot of steamed mussels and a slice of bread. Strong seas wash out lots of plastics onto the beach, so it makes for a great time to clean up. We are combining our support for #PlasticFreeJuly and #MandelaDay by organising a virtual beach cleanup on Cape Town’s beaches. Post your image (on Instagram) of your full bag of...
