Catch of the Day #035

Spring is here and it is showing. The weather is getting warmer and the SE winds are starting to blow. The good weather fishing gaps are getting longer and allowing the sea to settle and for us to go looking for fresh fish.Catches are small but the variety is here. We have fresh yellowtail coming in from the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean around Dassen Island (which I believe to be the fattiest and tastiest). Silverfish, Red Roman, Red Stumpnose and Black Bream are being caught in the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean out of Struisbaai while supporting...

Catch of the Day #034

The cold fronts and small weather gaps have made fishing difficult. We have caught a handful of red roman, red stumpnose and some silver fish in Struisbaai over the last few days... but catches have been far and few between with the cold water and fish not wanting to bite. We are patiently waiting for the yellowtail that have arrived at Dassen Island with lock jaw to start feeding, so hopefully we will have them on the menu after the next strong NW wind. With the rainy cold days, we have seen some Greenfish home chefs making the most of...

Catch of the Day #033

It's clear from the cold fronts and storms that are upon us that winter is here. Fishing conditions have been tougher as weather gaps are very small at this time of the year.  We are heavily restricted by the size of our boats and the seas we can fish in. Tuna has slowed down and almost completely disappeared, but we have had some nice catches of snoek up the west coast. Struisbaai is producing some lovely variety each week of hand line fish, mainly silver fish, kob, cape salmon, red roman and some yellowtail. We are looking forward to our...

Catch of the Day #032

The onset of the colder weather has seen many Capetonians hide away from the elements. On the fishing front however things have been absolutely off the charts! We've seen incredible variety as the mix of seasons – hot and cold days – pass by.This past week we've had an absolute record number of fresh fish options on the website – our widest range yet. Many of you have already taken this opportunity to try something new and exciting. Currently available – opah (also called "moonfish") is one of very few warm-blooded fish. They are great for sushi or on the...

Catch of the Day #031

The last 3 weeks have had us covering the peninsula daily, with great catches of fresh yellowfin tuna from Cape Point, swordfish and marlinfrom the deep, consistent catches of hake and kingklip from Table Bay and some regular catches of kob, silvers and some red fish from Struisbaai. I’m sure you have all felt the onset of colder mornings and the start of the NW winds. As these cold front weather systems approach, we will begin to see our tuna move off and their catches become more staggered. In winter months we look forward to our West Coast yellowtail and...
