For many years Greenfish herod our locally raised Ocean trout and King Trout. This was a great local alternative to imported salmon. Salmon farming traditionally beared a greater environmental toll. Recognising this, Greenfish chose not to stock it for many years, instead promoting our local Ocean Trout. However, the local wildlife found the ocean-raised trout just as delicious as we did. The seals feasting on our trout and we're forced to halt the offering of this product at Greenfish. To resolve this issue, we've partnered with a family-run importer of our Norwegian superior-grade salmon. This environmentally conscious producer shares our ethos. Raised in clear, cool waters, their salmon enjoy a 97.5% water to 2.5% salmon ratio per facility, promoting healthier growth without routine antibiotics. Growth is organic, taking 12-18 months for each salmon to reach 4-8kg.
Their feed ratio has decreased from 5:1 to 1.2kg per 1kg of salmon, with around 70% of feed derived from vegetables and the rest from marine resources, primarily non-edible fish by-products. This farmed Atlantic salmon's carbon footprint is lower than beef and pork, and the farm is GLOBALG.A.P. accredited.
Despite efforts to mitigate environmental impact, air freighting salmon from Europe is unavoidable. To offset this, we're partnering with Greenpop to plant a tree for every 10 boxes of salmon fillets sold, bolstering biodiversity and expanding Gaansbaai's coastal ecosystem.

Organic salmon follows EU regulations and is DEBIO audited. Their diet includes maritime feed from MSC-certified sustainable fishery offcuts. Regular environmental surveillance and inspections reinforce their organic credentials.
