Our Portuguese sardines are fresh caught in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Portugal and Morocco, and immediately frozen to preserve their distinctive, salty flavour. Sardines have long been a staple for the people of Portugal whose history is tied to the cold Atlantic Ocean where these fish flourish. The Portuguese prefer to enjoy their Sardines whole, grilled over hot coals.

Instructions
Your Portuguese sardines will arrive frozen, simply store in your freezer (up to 3 months) and use at your leisure. It is best to remove product from packaging to defrost, simply place on a tray in your fridge and allow to thaw slowly.
Any special requests or instructions can be left in the NOTES section at the Checkout. Eg: Your doorbell does not work, you require a phone call before the order arrives, you would like the fillets / steaks vacuum packed seperately or cut into smaller portions etc.

Traditional Grilled Sardines
Grilled sardines are quick and easy to make, and generally how they are eaten in Portugal. See how in this recipe from The Fishwife. You will need:
- 24 fresh caught Portuguese sardines
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- Salt
- Freshly ground pepper
- A handful of fresh rosemary sprigs
- Lemon wedges
Preparation:
- Prepare a hot grill, making sure the grill is oiled. Rinse the sardines, and dry with paper towels. Toss with the olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.
- When the grill is ready, toss the rosemary sprigs directly on the fire. Wait for the flames to die down, then place the sardines directly over the heat, in batches if necessary. Grill for a minute or two on each side, depending on the size. Transfer from the grill to a platter using tongs or a wide metal spatula and serve with lemon wedges.

- Collections are free and take place Monday to Friday.
- Orders placed online before 11am will be ready to collect same-day from 12h00 to 5pm.
- Orders placed online after 11am will be made ready for collection the following working day, from 12h00 to 5pm.
- Should you place your order after 11am and need it that day, or need to collect before 11am (Monday to Friday) please contact our office 063 666 2802 and we will get it ready for you, it normally takes us an hour to cut and prepare.

We are situated in the bend in a complex called Berkley Square. Ask security for Greenfish Collections. Please park outside the home collection door and ring bell. It is well sign posted. Please park right outside the door.

Read about the health benefits of sardines. Woke up early next morning and ordered some while half asleep. Fish arrived by lunchtime the same day. The sardines were a nice size, fresh (no strong fishiness after thawing), easy to clean and tasted delicious. Couldn't ask for anything more really.

I first had real sardines in Algeciras, Spain in 1982 until that time being from USA I thought sardines only came in a tin! Every time I have Greenfish Sardines I think about my trips to Spain as a young Merchant Navy Engineer. They are delicious but the best part is sharing them with my dogs who gulp them down raw barely defrosted for a huge protein boost. Great as a starter to any Piri Piri style braai!
