The first Organic Salmon in Africa

Ryan Nienaber behind the scenes low impact fishing

Greenfish has always swum upstream and pushed the envelope in terms of fresh fish home delivery on the same day - quality, service, species and seasonal catches are all top priorities. We reintroduced live abalone to home users and now offer you the first certified Norwegian salmon in South Africa.

While our current Norwegian salmon is excellent and is coming from a certified farm that works closely with nature, they have also started a line of organic salmon. We are now pleased to bring you both options and give you the choice of what suits your lifestyle the best.

Our ~2kg fresh fillet arrives at your door scaled and pin boned, ready for you to cook, sashimi or ceviche. If you would prefer your salmon is smaller, vacuum sealed portions, please leave us a note in the checkout section of your shopping cart and our team will cut and package your order accordingly.

What is organic salmon?

For a salmon to be classified as organic, it must be farmed to the EU organic regulations and audited by DEBIO.  Organic salmon is fed with maritime feed made from off cuts from fish derived from MSC certified sustainable fisheries.  Environmental surveillance is an important factor in the DEBIO audits, with regular inspections by the certification body.

Salmon from Norway is raised in cold, clear, good quality waters in the fjords.  They grow at their own pace and reach 4-8kg in just 12-18 months.  Salmon from Norway has a pure fresh taste, with fat marbling and an attractive red-orange colouring.  High content of marine oils makes organic salmon a good source of EPA and DHA.

Sustainability

These salmon are farm raised fish on a farm which is licensed to operate in an environmentally appropriate location to avoid impact on the area.  No more than 10kg of salmon per square meter of water per facility is allowed. This is to ensure the fish has sufficient space to swim and grow. No routine antibiotics are used in the salmon as they generally remain healthy throughout their lifecycle due to the clean waters and space they are given to swim. This farmed Atlantic salmon has a lower carbon footprint than both beef and pork. The farm is an accredited member of GLOBALG.A.P.

Greenfish is planting trees

Despite the good record of the salmon we have picked, we cannot ignore the impact of physically flying it over from Europe. We have decided to partner with a local NGO, Greenpop, in an effort to offset some of these carbon emissions.
We will be planting 1 tree for every 10 boxes of salmon fillets we sell. The trees will be planted around the coastal fishing community of Gaansbaai in an effort to increase biodiversity and expand the ecosystem in the area.

I would love to know more about the farming principles.

    Warm regards
