Learning to Save Lives: Our Team’s First Aid Journey

At Greenfish, we know that the ocean isn’t the only place where unexpected things can happen. Every day, we work in environments where accidents — big or small — are possible. That’s why we believe in empowering our team with more than just professional skills. We believe in giving them knowledge that could one day save a life.

A two day course, seven of us — myself plus two staff members from each section — took part in a two-day St. John’s First Aid course, right here on our premises.

The course covered all the essentials:

CPR and how to respond in cases of heart attacks or strokes

Basic treatment for wounds, sprains, and breaks

What it means to be a first responder in an emergency

It’s a starting point, yes, but an important one. Sometimes, those first few minutes of action can mean the difference between something small and something life-changing.

We’re lucky to be just a kilometre away from Vincent Polloti Hospital — as I personally experienced last year when I needed urgent medical attention. But in those moments before professional help arrives, knowing what to do can make all the difference.

Beyond safety, this training also gave our staff something more: confidence and empowerment. For some team members, this was their first exposure to formal training. Seeing their enthusiasm, focus, and willingness to learn was incredibly inspiring. It reminded me that growth isn’t just about new skills — it’s about building people up so they can feel valued, capable, and prepared.

And the setup? Well, it wasn’t fancy. We turned the box packaging storeroom into a makeshift classroom with tables and a data projector. But with the right attitude, you can make anything work. Shoulder to shoulder, we learned together, shared laughs, and walked away with knowledge that might one day help us save a life.

This experience was more than just a course. It was a reminder of the importance of preparation, teamwork, and the power of investing in people.

Because at the end of the day, safety isn’t just about regulations. It’s about caring for one another.
